The newest innovations in lighting controls automate when and how much light is needed based on the size and use of the space, ambient light available, occupancy, and time of day. Control strategies take into consideration occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting, dimming, timing, and metering. Although the installation of controls typically includes additional project design and commissioning costs, stricter codes already mandate the use of basic controls. Well-designed lighting control systems further reduce lighting loads by 30 to 60 percent and plug loads by 15 to 30 percent. More advanced systems include networking and integration into facility-wide automation systems.
